‘Prem Ratan Dhan Payo’ is the fourth film in which director-actor duo Sooraj Barjatya and Salman Khan are working together; and while on the sets at Karjat, they decided to celebrate two decades of the hugely popular family drama ‘Hum Aapke Hain Koun!’ by releasing a special video.
The video highlights the fond memories they shared when they made one of Hindi cinema’s most iconic family films. Wearing a brown shirt and white trousers, Salman talks about Sooraj’s calm demeanour, an aspect of his personality that separates him from most modern directors.
"What I love about Sooraj is that he see severything in soft-focus and finds beauty around him. He is a very non-judgemental person and lets people be," says Salman.
He also states, "I've always maintained that although we have had Guru Dutt and Raj Kapoor, Sooraj is the best director in Hindi cinema."
Salman then hints at a director who "yells a lot," and as Sooraj quietly looks on, even names him. "One day, I saw Sanjay Leela Bhansali yelling; apparently he does that quite a lot," he says, sounding perturbed about the incident."I had to tell him and I did - 'Sanjay, you must hang around with Sooraj Barjatya. And just see how he directs'."
Bhansali apparently apologized and told Salman,"Yes, I've been losing it (his temper) quite a lot these days," to which Salman replied, "The first thing you do is make your actors feel beautiful and loved. Even a Taj Mahal can be made with love." Bhansali and Salman have worked as a team in three films, ‘Khamoshi: The Musical’, ‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’ and ‘Saawariya’.
Salman also revealed that he had wanted to play the part which was eventually handed to Saif Ali Khan in Barjatya's ‘Hum Saath Saath Hain’. "He wanted to play the younger brother Vinod, but I had to convince him that as the older Prem, he would bring more maturity onscreen," stated Barjatya.
