Detailed Analysis:
'Mary Kom' is hitting the screens day after tomorrow and it is directed by debutant director Omung Kumar and has Priyanka Chopra in lead role where she plays world champion boxer Mary Kom. Filmshowcases journey of India's pride and world champion boxer Mary Kom (Priyanka Chopra) from small village of Manipur to competitive boxing circuits across the globe. How boxing bug bites her early in her childhood and though her father wanted her to be an athlete, she rebels to be a boxer which was rarity in those days. Her coach (Sunil Thapa) spots her talent and trains her vigorously. She wins state championships and then national championship. After winning three world championships, she decides to tie the knot with Onler Kom (Darshan Kumar) which disrupts her career as she gives birth to twin children. How Marry resurrects her career against physical, emotional and social odds form the climax of the film. Performance wise this is no doubt one of the best performances from an actress in modern era. It is special because Priyanka transforms her physically into a boxer and acts like a north east girl without making it caricature. She is bound to win all awards for such a stellar act next year. Watch out for scenes where she hugs her father after he pleads sorry or when she cuts her hair in order to show frustration, spell bounding! Darshan Kumar has sparkling presence and she surprises even in a brief side kick role. Sunil Thapa is backbone of the film and carries the weight in right manner. Though you can't help but compare him with great Danny Denzogappa. Other supporting cast is brilliant and looks real. Background music of the film is bang on and lifts the film though music of the film fails big time as no song registers except 'Ziddi'. Editing is good and screenplay writing is very natural. Film never gets over dramatic except couple of scenes towards the end and characters look believable. Camerawork is routine. Veteran art director Omung Kumar makes an impressive debut as a director. He makes a clean sleek film and keeps the balance between drama and realism right. It is not over dramatic like 'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag' and remains true to its lead character. Surely a director to watch out for! Film can be viewed from different perspectives - its sports drama, an inspirational true tale, shining example of women's triumph against all odds and above all a patriotic film which deserves standing ovation (which you will give no matter what). Film will release day after tomorrow and will get opening of some sort for sure due to presence of Priyanka and huge pre release buzz especially in urban areas. Film will get almost no competition from old releases and there is no prominent release along with it. Tax exemption will further boost the collections. Overall film should establish new milestone for women centric film at box office.
